HELIOPHILIA1

Artist: MICHELE HURL

Taking several months this lighthouse was made at Creative Glass Guild Bristol and comprises a mix of leaded and fused leaded pieces. Inspired by walks from Burnham to Berrow wreck I have tried to capture the feel of the sunset and rays. The front represents the low lighthouse with the red stripe and two lighthouse windows.  The other three windows are a triptych of abstract fused glass setting the scene.
Once completed, it seemed only appropriate to illuminate the lighthouse, continuing the theme of Heliophilia along with accentuating the plethora of colourful glass pieces. If each panel were to be sold as the triptych or separate panels they would be sold and valued at a minimum of £250 per panel, however this piece has been made specifically for the lighthouse trail and to raise money for the charity so a guide price has been set at £400.

NIGHT LIGHT DAY SIGHT4

Artist: DAMIEN J NICHOLSON

The idea behind my lighthouse was inspired by the lighthouse being ‘the eyes of the sea’. It was painted in a surreal way in order to depict the magical qualities of such a building. The eyes are open and closed in a way to suggest that, as well as being visible during the day, it lights the night while we sleep.

GET THERE BY TRAIN5

Artist: JANE LEE

Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge are inextricably linked, with Highbridge being the rail link for Burnham-on-Sea.
Highbridge was not only an important station on the Somerset & Dorset line: it was also the site of the company’s locomotive works, which closed in 1930, and a small engine shed that remained open until the line and station finally shut in 1966.
This lighthouse is not only to show the near history of Burnham-on-Sea as a holiday destination but to remind us of the importance of Highbridge as a railway town.

TWO NAUGHTY MONKEYS10

Artist: PETER HOWE

The whole concept was exciting because of the size and fact that I could design and work around the lighthouse.
It opened up a new working dimension. I thought it would be nice to have a family theme appealing more to the children.I wanted it bright and hands on, as children are in a painting class. Some will be very neat with the brushwork and others will leave with more paint on themselves than the paper!  The Monkeys seemed to be a fun way to go because as with the children, some would be very neat while others just wanted to leave their mark.

DEEP BLUE SEA27

Artist: JANE LEE

The Deep Blue Sea lighthouse was designed to represent exactly that with roof as the surface of the sea.  On all sides are favorite quotations connected with the sea, mostly extracts from poems by William Shakespeare, H W Longfellow, James Joyce, John Masefield, Matthew Arnold, James Kidd, Chika Onyenezi, Rudyard Kipling and Seamus Heaney.  There is also a recipe by Mrs Beeton and a declaration by Elizabeth I.  Find the lighthouse, discover the quote.

LIGHTHOUSE FLOCK

31

Artist: VERITY TREVOR-MORGAN

Why seagulls? They are certainly synonymous with Burnham and this coastline. People seem to either love them or hate them and I love them and really appreciate their grace and elegance in flight. It was my desire to capture that movement on each of the sides, yet also to show an element of humour in their faces and the mischief they can cause on the seafront! The legs were painted to represent the legs of a seagull and also the feathers which are often found lying along the beach. I love seagulls and hope my lighthouse gives pleasure to people and raises a smile!

 CARNIVAL

17

Artist: SUE HAMMOND-LOVATT

The idea came from a series of large bright canvasses I painted a few years ago on a ‘Carnival’ theme. I had been to many Burnham Carnivals and had photos of floats. I looked through the photos and abstracted the shapes and colours making sketches of shapes and how they might fit on the lighthouse. Finally I added the lights in different sizes, some with hard edges some with soft edges in an attempt to make them look like lights going on and off. After hours of painting and adaptations, this led to the lighthouse as it is today.

WHITE HORSES23

Artist: MARGARET MICKLEWRIGHT

This design arose from my love of horses and a love of the sea. I envisaged several horses galloping along the sands near the lighthouse. To make each side different I chose different times of day – dusk, daylight, dawn and night time, which in turn allowed me to explore the use of colour too.
Each panel has a gesso base and I used acrylic ink and pencil to paint the background and the horses. I thought that the panel with one window would lend itself to a night time side, with the moon safely ensconced in it. I used a pearlescent ink to make it glow slightly. One of the difficulties in using ink is controlling the flow, especially on a vertical surface. As the sides developed, I thought that I would use subtle local references, like the dunes and the lighthouse itself.

FLY AWAY32

Artist: LES ROPER

This idea was inspired by my daughters love of butterflies. I do not think of myself as an artist but I did enjoy the challenge. It had to be light and bright but I knew there had to be some detail to make it eye catching. Currently situated in a beautiful location by the sea the lighthouse would look at home in any garden or conservatory.

PEACOCK PARADE

33

Artist: SARAH BERRYMAN

Peacocks have featured heavily in my life over the last year and felt like the perfect subject for my lighthouse. The peacock symbolises immortality and the feathers are said to carry spiritual healing energy that can be used to assist people seeking balance and harmony in their lives. In Hinduism the peacock is associated with Lakshmi, who is a deity representing benevolence, patience, kindness, compassion and good luck. The peacocks wrap around the body of the lighthouse to represent the idea of protecting those in need. The gold leaf symbolises good health and represents the sun, a symbol of happiness.

PETALS OF LIGHT12

Artist: LINDA GEE

The inspiration for my lighthouse has come from my love of colour and the joy of my garden. I have used a medley of different coloured fabric and threads which I have cut, layered bonded and stitched on canvas to created a summer garden. It has been a joy to create this piece of artwork and I have loved every minute of it.

SEASIDE FUN

7

Artist: GEORGE FOWERAKER

Our lighthouse was a joint effort between Me, Colleen Blake, Sue Meads and my Granddaughter Ali Dell and her Partner Reg Day, with Ali and Reg doing most of the work. The inspiration was the seaside. We tried hard to try and convey the joy of a seaside holiday in Burnham-on-Sea although one side has more of a tropical theme.

KELP FOREST30

Artist: CORA STOCK

‘Kelp Forest’, painted by the artist Cora Stock, can be seen in the foyer of Brean Splash at Brean Leisure Centre: open most days from 10am – 5pm.The theme Kelp Forest was inspired by an underwater image of seaweed forests waving in the ocean currents with fish and other sea creatures hiding amongst the giant fronds. Seals, dolphins, octopus, squid and shoals of fish are depicted on the four sides.

ANGELS AND CHERUBS9

Artist: JUDITH CHAMPION

Originally qualifying in Architecture, my true love lies in painting and drawing.
The magnificent carvings by Grinling Gibbons of Angels and Cherubs in St Andrews Church have always fascinated me, and I loved the idea of reproducing them on my lighthouse. A bit of local history on a local landmark! I loved painting them and hope you enjoy them too.
I will be taking part in Somerset Art Weeks Open Studios 20th Sept – 5th Oct in my ‘Old Piggery’ studio/gallery (venue 195) …do call in and see my new work.

SOMERSET SEASONS24

Artist: GERALDINE BOLEY

As the lighthouse is for a local charity and located mainly in Burnham and Highbridge I decided to base my ideas around places in close proximity to the Trail. This way viewers could identify the scenes and I would be portraying something I was familiar with. I wanted to use the sides of the lighthouse as a canvas with either one or two paintings on each.
The paintings represent a different view and a different season.
I am primarily an animal painter so included wildlife that can sometimes be spotted in each location and added my own terrier to one of the winter scenes.

COSMIC LIGHTHOUSE21

Artist: HIGHBRIDGE COMMUNITY YOUTH CLUB

The idea behind this lighthouse is based upon the sky at night. A lighthouse is used to guide sailors home and traditionally the stars and planets have been used to navigate the sea. By decorating the lighthouse with the night sky we wanted to show the link between the two.
